Cric-isconceptions !!!

Why do guyz make such a big deal outta women watching cricket? #Nothisseriouslyannoysme. If you're wondering what's with the hash-tags, yes, I have been diagnosed with tweet-emia. But, I have observed this 'it's not a girl's thingy" phenomena particularly during the WC 2011. Whenever a "GIRL" posts/likes/comments something related to a cricket match, you can observe, quite a lot of times a series of/at least a few guyz sarcastically commenting to it. Here is a trailer which is a compedium from our very own 'hypocritical social networking site reaching its saturation levels' Facebook!

Girl: Nehraaaaaaaaa... U totally suck !!! :X :X :X

Guy 1: Allo, one baal how many over? sorryy.. one over hooww many baal? ;)
Guy 2, Guy 3... Guy 6 like this

*******************************************************************

Girl: Can't wait for the Indo-Pak cricket match to start!

Retarded guy 1: Oh.. so u watch cricket eh?? ;)
Retarded guy 2, 3... 10 like this

Here are some common misconceptions regarding women watching cricket:

1. Not many women watch cricket
2. Those who watch, don't know the game
3. Cricket is a man's game.
4. Women following cricket is wierd/funny/BEYOND ME!
5. 'You should see girls talking about cricket. It's hilarious, dude"!
6. A lot of women dislike cricket

And the clarrification:

1. Not many women watch cricket?

Alrite, can I have a list of the 'male bimbos' who think so? I might not have the exact stats on how many women watch the game, but it's definitely not what the 'male bimbos' think. Sorry, you got your numbers wrong this time. Literate and sane homo-sapiens should have known by now that Cricket is almost considered as a religion in India. So, from when have they started discriminating religion on the basis of gender? Center fresh kha aur dimaak ki bathi jala (have a center fresh and trigger your brain).

2. Women who watch, don't know the game.

Here goes my self-stats. At least 70%  (tolerances included, I'm not being foolishly optimistic) of the women who watch cric, definitely know the basics of the game, and they are not dummies. The basic rules of the game, what is a boundary/six (this is if you really want to get down to the grass root level), to a lot other technicalities in the game. We can have a quiz now,if you'd want to.

3. Cricket is a man's game.

It is not completely. Infact, Indian women's cricket team came into existence even before our 'boys' won the 1st world cup for us.Starting with test cricket, then to ODI's and now the girls are into T20 too. It's a different ball game as to how many watch women playing cricket than watching the 'boys', nevertheless my point here is Cric is definitely NOT a man's game. Just because you have 11 odd players, the extras bringing in gatorade and towels and the coach as men, it doesn't make it a "man's game"! The huge crowd out there in any stadium is never full without the galz stepping up to cheer the home team!

4. Women following cricket is wierd/funny/BEYOND ME!

To all those who make this statement, it is definitely NOT 'beyond me' to watch you stare like a dumbass when women talk about cricket because you are definitely wierd and unknowingly funny. There are a lotta women who really appreciate and follow cricket. Be it waking up to odd hours, stay up, bunk classes to watch cric in the canteen. Ah come on, boys, we have done it too and still do. * Boo hoo * on this too!

5. 'You should see girls talking about cricket. It's hilarious, dude"!

Yeah, for one reason that we might not use abuses in between a convo. So, that's one of the primary reasons why you might find it 'un-cool' or 'not the guy thing'. One need not speak technically all the time. At times, conversations can be kept plain and simple as in "Nehra, U suck", which still holds true after we lost to the Chokers. When a girl posts something of this sort, there comes the role of Mr.Retarded guy 1, 2, and so on. When a guy posts the same thing, there comes the role of loyal guy friends 1, 2, 3, and so on to like the post and comment "Yeah dude... totally Nehra was ********************". I'm sure you are more than capable to fill those blanks. I don't mind admitting to it - I ain't that capable as I scored low grades in 'fill in the blanks' in school! :)

6.A lot of women dislike cricket

To an extent, I do agree. Reasons being it's time consuming and hard to understand how people sit in front of a tv for hours on and on watching men hit a ball and run. But, there are a lotta men out there too who can't sit for sucha long time and watch, even if it's a T20. I don't say we are equals, but cut me some slack!

So, we may not sleep/eat/drink cricket, but we do watch it! - 'Gonna-be Pepsi ad tagline for women'! :)

Cheers,
Janz!

  1. I agree, agree and so totally agree that I wish my sister would watch a little less cricket. She has watched all the IPL matches that has ever taken place. So I never had an impression that girls/women dont watch/know cricket.
Here are my observations/comments on your rant.
    - Do you know why guys make fun of girls? Because they are GUYS. We think we are cool if we make a smartass comment on Facebook. I cant imagine a guy saying,"Spare Nehra. He has bowled in the death better than others in the past. Hitting a six or missing the ball in that stage is like predicting a coin toss."
    - At least the comments/likes in a girls post goes to the 10th guy. Nobody would give a second glance to a guy's post. Believe me.
    - If you think using abusive words makes a guy cool, it is like saying roll the 'R's, have a barbecue and you are american. Abuses used wrongly/too often is so uncool but we wouldnt discourage him.. Eg for such encouragement - TR (although the reason is not abusive words)
    - In point 3, you talk about womens cricket and how it is as popular as any other womens team sport. But the statement,"The huge crowd out there in any stadium is never full without the galz stepping up to cheer the home team!", seems to vindicate the talking points of chauvinists who say, "Let the guys play, let the girls cheer"..

As long as there is cricket, as long as cameramen keep focusing on pretty girls, as long as girls keep posting "Nehraaaaaaaaa... U totally suck !!! :X :X :X" the bantering will continue.. :)
Why do you want to take away the fun and ruin the party? Do keep watching/talking/"critically analyzing" cricket and keep the world running..

PS: Guy 1: Dude, how is she scoring so well in her exams??
Guy 2: Of course, she writes the answers in black, headings in blue, underlines main points in red and draws diagrams in pencil.. what do you expect..
Guy 1: Pff.. alright then, I am happy with my marks..
(Alright.. I just wanted to say, dont use different colors.. )

  2. I'm not exaggerating when i say this, but there r tons of guys out there who dont watch/like/want to do anything with cricket...but in order to blend into the larger audience, they pretend (and their efforts at pretending are pathetic)

For men, cricket is the one domain they feel is their own, god knows why...so when a girl makes an intelligent comment, they feel threatened and want to defend their territory...and as Harbhajan singh so rightly puts it - 'Attack is the best form of defence'...so there we go...here's why they do what they do :)
